Gruppetto Multi-Day Stage Race “Gruppetto is an Italian term for a group of riders in a stage race (typically non-climbers and suffering domestiques) who ride together as a group with the sole intention of finishing within the stage's time limit to allow them to start the next day.“
The Masters and Ladies Multi-Day Stage Race mimics the Tour de France grand tour: - Gruppetto combines the 21 x Masters & Ladies races of the season into one “grand tour” multi stage race. - Cyclists competes for Overall Jersey Classifications* as the Masters and Ladies racing season progresses. - New Jersey wearers (leaders) are announced after each Masters and Ladies stage results. - Gruppetto Handicap (HC) & Age Group Handicap (AG) is created based on Masters and Ladies route statistics. - Five Jersey Classifications • Maillot Jaune • Handicap Classification • Age Group Classification • Mountain Classification • Sprint Classification - The rider who has taken the most overall time (based on Gruppetto HC time) is awarded the Lanterne Rouge. “ The Red Lantern, as in the red light at the back of a train / vehicle so it can be seen in the dark. In past years of Tour de France, this person sometimes carried a small red light beneath his saddle. Such was the sympathy that he could command higher fees in the races that previously followed the Tour. “ Lanterne Rouge is the award of courage as it says you never give up through adversity (per adua) There can only be one Lanterne Rouge! |
